Our varsity winter sports are in full swing in Greenport. The season kicked off for our varsity athletes on November 13th. The sports going on in our winter season includes boys and girls basketball, wrestling, bowling, winter track, and cheer. Our teams are looking forward to trying to maintain some of the success from our fall season and last season as well. Here's what to look forward to during our winter seasons.
Starting off with the boys basketball team, the Porters are looking forward to making it back to the playoffs again and are returning 4 out of the 5 starters from last season. The Porters are looking to be competitive in the league this season. Senior starter Leon Creighton had this to say about the upcoming season, “I'm really looking forward to hopefully winning a lot of games this season and hopefully making some noise come playoff time.” Some of the other headliners on the team are point guard Kal-El Marine and forward Taiquan Brumsey. The first game of the season for the Greenport Porters was December 7th against Eastport South Manor right here in Greenport. The boys are all hopeful for a great upcoming basketball season.
Our Greenport cheerleading squad coached by Greenport’s own Jessica Dlhopolsky is looking for another fun and exciting season this year. The team has a good mix of familiar and new faces on the team this year. The team, led by our senior captains Brianna Rivas and Nancy Hernandez, are looking forward to being all together and back in the gym. Coach Jessica Dlhopolsky said “I love the hype of the gym and to see all of my varsity girls together it's amazing!” Be on the lookout this season as our cheerleaders have been working really hard on some new cheers and new sounds and are excited to show us what they’ve got this year!
The girls basketball team, coached by Everett Corwin, is looking forward to another successful season. Led by senior captain Lilly Corwin, the team is hopeful for a fun and eventful season. When asked about the goals this season Corwin said, “I mean our goal is obviously to compete and possibly make the playoffs.” She also is looking forward to hopefully getting another county title under her belt this season. The girls first game was Saturday December 9th against Bellport right here in Greenport. The girls are looking forward to hopefully another amazing season.
Our wrestling team, coached by Nicolas Fioretti, is looking forward to a great season this year. The team is combined with Southold and Mattituck and is looking to be competitive this season. There is only one varsity player from Greenport on the team this year: sophomore Dougie Corazzini (above). The wrestling team picked up a big win versus Riverhead earlier this season and Coach Fioretti is looking forward to an eventful and competitive season for his team.
Our winter track team hosted in Southold is off to a great start this winter season. Led by senior Cameron Stanton, who jumped 18 feet and 1 inch to qualify for nationals in Boston this year, was very excited to get the chance to be able to participate in nationals. “When I heard 18 and 1 I was like oh my god yay i’m going to nationals!” Cameron who is ranked number 6th in the United States right now is excited to see where she ends up this season.
We also have a bowling team combined with Southold. Greenport is represented by 3 students, John Harvey, Glenn Heidtman and Destin Rallis. They are coached by Alex Sinclair and their meets are held at The All Star in Riverhead.
Our winter sports season is in full swing and all of our teams are hopeful for yet another great season. The Quill wishes all of our sports team good luck this season and we are excited to see where everyone ends up this season!
