THE WELCH STREET JOURNAL

Pt1 -Introduction

Welcome to the Welch Street Journal, the Financial Report from High Schoolers, For High Schoolers

Wall Street, the Mecca for all things finance. JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs are all headquartered there—staple names in the world of investing—but what exactly is investing? The Financial Illiteracy epidemic has left no area untouched, so I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't know what investing truly means. To test this, another reporter and I entered a class and surveyed the students. Out of 12 students, only one knew what an investment really was.

Welcome Back, Porters!

The 2026–2027 Fall sports school year is just rolling in, a time of excitement for fans of Greenport Athletics. Even during the off-season, our teams have been practicing and preparing day and night to cause trouble in the league. The most exciting news undoubtedly is with our football program; let us start there.

Patriot Day Ceremony

As part of our yearly tradition, Greenport High School hosted a ceremony to honor the heroes of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

The ceremony officially began at 7:45 am outside the main entrance of the school, with the fire department arriving early to set up the enormous American flag— hoisted 50 feet above the lawn by two ladder trucks.

Why So Much Hate: The New Wave of New York Rap

Jimmy Cohen ‘28

In an era when a rapper can go from an unknown teenager to an internet celebrity almost overnight, it is difficult to separate the music from the phenomenon surrounding it. Judah Weston is a perfect example; the young New York rapper first built an audience by relentlessly posting snippets and freestyles online (Funnily enough, I personally remember when he had 300 followers and was rapping in his closet). Eventually, Judah turned TikTok's attention into a record deal with GoodTalk— a record label run by music executive Jonny Shipes. His rise was accelerated by the viral success of “Ra Ta Dia” and “Thug”, these two undeniably catchy tracks bringing a different sound that introduced a large audience to his unique musical style. This origin, however, introduces a key challenge for Judah as his career in music kicks off.

Porters Varsity Football is Back!

Michael Garret '28

The long-awaited return of varsity football in Greenport has finally come. After 2 years of being unable to field a varsity team, the Porters just hosted their home opener against John Glenn High School on September 10th. The Porters played hard after a John Glenn touchdown minutes into the game, but struggled against the much larger team. Greenport was down 34-8 after the second quarter, but locked down defensively in the second half. Cornerback Namiah Santacroche and Linebacker Markus Krushevski made multiple pivotal tackles to keep the opponents from growing a larger lead. The game concluded with a 34-8 score.
