Valentines Day

Who is Cupid?

Cupid, also known as Eros in Greek mythology, is a deity associated with love, affection, and desire— and Valentine’s Day.

Cupid is depicted as a winged, boyish figure wielding a bow and arrow. Cupid’s attributes, such as the bow and arrow, were established in late antiquity, around the sixth century. He is often depicted as blindfolded, symbolizing the arbitrary nature of love, thus coining the phrase "love is blind." Based on Greek tradition, Cupid has a dual genealogy, depicting him either as a primordial god or as the child of divine couples. The Romans reinterpreted Eros as Cupid, sometimes portraying him as the son of Venus.  He is featured prominently in many mythological tales.

One of the most famous stories in Roman mythology involving Cupid is the tale of Cupid and Psyche. In this story, Psyche, a mortal woman, is so beautiful that she incites the jealousy of Venus. As punishment, Venus orders Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with the most vile creature he can find. However, Cupid accidentally pricks himself with his own arrow and falls

deeply in love with Psyche. Overtime Cupid’s story would continue to evolve.

Contrary to the Romans, Christian-influenced art depicted Cupid as having a dual nature, embodying both Heavenly and Earthly love. During the Renaissance, he gained complex allegorical meanings, and in contemporary popular culture, he is often shown drawing his bow to inspire love. In Roman literature and art, Cupid was frequently portrayed as a mischievous and playful figure, sometimes causing chaos with his arrows.

Whether in Christian or Roman interpretations, Cupid remains a timeless symbol, adding a touch of enchantment to Valentine’s Day.

Valentine's Sweet Treat

Rocio Azama

Class of 2025

One of the best ways to get into the Valentine's day spirit is to bake a delicious treat. I chose to make heart shaped cupcakes! My inspiration came from a tiktok that came across my feed the other day.

I decided to try it out because it seemed simple, yet very good. It only took me about 40 minutes to make!

I used a Pillsbury box mix. I chose the strawberry funfetti flavor because it was pink! I followed the instructions on the back of the box, which was very simple and easy.

I would say the toughest part was following how to get the heart shape. The shape is accomplished by crumpling up a piece of aluminum foil and placing it in the middle of the cupcake tin and the mold. After placing the aluminum foil in the cupcakes they were placed in the oven for 20 minutes.

When I took them out some of the cupcakes were perfectly shaped and some were a little deformed but were still cute!

Something I would do differently is fill the cupcakes a little less so the shape turns out more visible. I noticed that the ones I filled less were the ones that turned out better. So definitely do that!

I would rate the experience a 9/10 and I totally recommend doing it. Make sure to remember it's not how they turn out but it's about how much fun you have in the process! Happy Valentine's day! <3

What to Wear

Chris Doucett styled by Maddie Baer

For Valentine’s day you could make the perfect outfit in just seconds! Have anything red or pink? That’s perfect! You could have something as plain as a red crewneck, and spice it up by just adding a collared shirt underneath! Even if you don’t have something that fits the red to pink color scheme, a classic all black outfit also looks very elegant and romantic.
