Riverhead Town Board Approval of Pet Store Law

On October 10th The Riverhead Town Board approved a law that bans the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits. This law puts an end to what some individuals call an “inhumane” and “cruel” practice. According to the Town Board the purpose of this law is to “break the puppy mill pipeline, to promote animal welfare and encourage best practices in the breeding and purchasing of dogs, cats and rabbits offered for retail sale in the Town of Riverhead”, this was unanimously approved at the Town Board meeting.
I am super happy with this new law as I have been advocating for animal rights for as long as I can remember. I have always tried my hardest to encourage my peers to support local animal shelters. I encourage rescuing animals and supporting shelters for many reasons; better trained pets, inexpensive, stop the breeding of animals and most importantly, blessing a dog with a family and home. The animals in pet stores experience immense levels of stress because of tough living conditions, typically causing them anxiety following the adoption.
I believe the law approved by The Riverhead Town Board banning the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits is the start of many more movements toward animal rights in our area. This law is a major stride towards ending unjust acts against animals for personal and business benefits. My family and I have always supported rescue shelters, we have rescued 4 dogs throughout my lifetime. We feel that we have won the absolute jackpot for dogs as they have all been well behaved and so grateful for the home and love we’ve given them. If you are thinking about adopting a pet soon, please consider rescuing from a local shelter. I am looking forward to the future of animal rights in our community and those surrounding it.
