Demirciyan Hits 1000

Angelina Higgins

Girls Varsity Basketball player Adrine Demirciyan hits her 1000th point before the end of the 1st half in a home game against Mattituck. Along with this much deserved accomplishment, the Porter's secured the win. This moment was electric, not only for Demirciyan, but for the whole crowd. Many family and community members came out to support her on this career milestone. I asked her some questions and here are her answers . . .

Do you have a pregame ritual that you do before every game?

  • Before the game I always get my ball handling in, I like to be by myself and think about the game we’re about to play and get my touches on the ball.

Is there a particular significance to your jersey number?

  • Initially I was #12 because that’s been my number since I was 10 years old. Then I switched to #14 because that was my dad's jersey number when he played high school ball.

What’s in your gym bag that might surprise people?

  • I have a stress ball in my gym bag in case I need it before games *laughs*.

What is your fondest memory of your high school career?

  • In my high school career I’ve had a lot of ups and some downs. With that being said, my fondest moments have been spending time with my team on the court. Playing the game and doing what I love surrounded by my closest friends, I’ve been so lucky to get the chance to do that.

What college will you be attending next year?

  • I will be attending East Stroudsburg University to play division II basketball

Why did you choose this college?

  • I chose ESU because the atmosphere matched exactly what I wanted in a school. The coaches there are exactly what I want as mentors and influencers going forward for basketball.

What does reaching 1,000 points mean to you?

  • Reaching 1000 points means so much to me. It’s just a reflection of all the hours spent working on my game. Despite all the things going on in the world that have come in the way of basketball, I luckily managed to have this opportunity in front of my hometown and my closest friends. I consider myself lucky to be supported by such great people.

Fall Sports Return to the Fall

Hayley Skrezec

As the varsity fall sports season reaches the end and the winter sports season encroaches on us, an overview on the fall sport season is necessary. Despite wins and losses, many players that we spoke with are grateful for much more than the teams records; they are grateful for the new relationships and connections this sports season has presented. This perspective has been shaped by the unfortunate impact COVID-19 had on school, sports, and social events.

The Porter’s varsity football team welcomed a new head coach this year, Timothy Mcardle. Coach Mcardle’s first official game as head coach ended in a 20-6 win against Wyandanch on Porter’s home field. This was a great way to start the season and set the tone for the rest. Along with this accomplishment, the football team has continued to secure wins. The Porter’s currently hold a record of 3-4. They are training for their last regular season game against Mount Sinai. This game will be a challenge and may potentially be their ticket into the playoffs. While speaking with a few football players, it is apparent that the Porter’s have their fingers crossed for a spot in the playoffs.

As always, the Greenport Cheerleading team continued to bring much needed school spirit to all games under the direction of Mrs. Dlhopolsky.

The Porter’s varsity field hockey team also welcomed a new coach to their program, Alexis Reed. Coach Reed played as goalie for her college field hockey team. Using her experience of the game, she helped the field hockey team gain knowledge and opportunity. The team is scheduled to play Pierson on November 1st in their first playoff game. They are hoping to secure a win against Pierson, but are thankful for the joy the regular season brought them.

The combined Mattituck-Southold-Greenport (MSG) varsity girls soccer team not only accomplished a lot in the course of their season regarding record, but also gained new friendships. Coached by Greenport teacher, Christopher Golden, this team ended their regular season with a record of 7-6-3. While they were supposed to be in the playoffs because of their standings, at the last minute they were told that they were surpassed by another team as a result of power point rankings from the year prior.

Although the boys varsity soccer team did not make the playoffs, as they had anticipated going into the season, they built unbreakable bonds and had great team chemistry. Coached by Greenport math teacher Greg Dlhopolsky, the boys varsity soccer team ended their regular season with a record of 3-12-1.

Like many of the other teams, Volleyball welcomed a familiar face as a new head coach. Mr. Fioretti, Health and Physical Education Teacher took over the reigns as head coach from Mr. Gunther. The girls varsity volleyball ended their season and said goodbye to four valuable seniors, but not without a successful dig pink game that raised funds and awareness for charity.

The Porter’s sports teams have accomplished many things this season and we are excited to see where the future takes them. We are looking forward to the start of the winter sports season.
