Nestled in the heart of Greenport, one teacher's journey reflects a deep commitment to education and community. Growing up in Massapequa Park, Long Island, Mr. Harley aka Chef Harley attended Massapequa High School, where a particular subject sparked a lifelong passion. "Chemistry was my favorite subject in school," he shared, highlighting the importance of curiosity in learning.
The desire to teach blossomed three years ago, following a personal milestone. "After I had my daughter and was training high school students on my family farm, I knew I wanted to be a teacher," he explained. This pivotal moment inspired a career dedicated to teaching young minds.
Reflecting on Mr. Harley's college experience, he appreciated the freedom it offered. "I liked the freedom to do work on my own schedule. Meeting new people from diverse backgrounds enriched my experience," he noted. At Colby College, they forged lasting friendships, while culinary school brought its own adventures, particularly in exploring New York City's vibrant food scene with fellow cooks.
Having lived in Southold, Mr. Harley had frequently visited Greenport before joining the school. "I had been to Greenport many times before," he recalled. Outside of his professional life, food is a significant passion. "I cook every day at home and am a die-hard fan of the New York Giants, New York Knicks, and Chelsea FC," he shared. Gardening, woodworking, and discovering new music also fill their leisure time.
When asked about hidden talents, he revealed, "I am a wizard with the wand in lacrosse." The educator also expressed a desire to dine with Anthony Bourdain, saying, "He knew where to eat, was friendly and empathetic, and could talk about anything."
His decision to work at Greenport stemmed from the unique culture that he observed. "There is an incredible trust between students and staff that I have not seen at other schools," he remarked, emphasizing the strong community bond.
“I’d like the students of Greenport to know that I am here for them,” Mr. Harley expressed sincerely. He is committed to supporting students academically, socially, emotionally, athletically, and in their career pursuits. "They just need to ask," he added, reinforcing his approachable nature.
In the kitchen, one of his favorite dishes to prepare is mushroom risotto, which he describes as "all about the technique." He also finds French cuisine challenging due to its complexity, yet enjoys the comfort of kimchi fried rice with bacon when seeking solace in cooking. "Chicken and vegetable soup is something everyone should be able to make because it’s healthy and comforting," he advised.
Lastly, when it comes to baking, nothing brings him more joy than crafting a chocolate soufflé. Mr. Harely embodies the spirit of Greenport, blending a passion for teaching with a love for culinary arts, and a dedication to fostering a supportive environment for every student.
