Class of 2024
Our varsity fall sports season is officially underway for our Greenport Porters. Sports such as football, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, girls and boys soccer, and girls tennis are in full swing. All of our teams are looking to be very successful this season and potentially compete for postseason spots in various sports. Let's take a look at some of our own Greenport Porters who played a major role in our fall sports.
Starting off with our football team, the porters started off with a big win versus Wyndanch with a 28-0 victory. We had touchdowns from Greenports own Leon Creighton, who contributed a lot in the Porters big win. Athletic director Brian Toussaint noted Greenports' big win as one of the highlights of the fall season, “It's only been a couple weeks so far in our fall sports seasons. but I definitely think our varsity football team picking up a big win versus Wyndanch was definitely the biggest highlight of the fall season so far.” The porters will have plenty of time to continue winning, with games continuing throughout october.
Coming off a playoff appearance last year our field hockey team, coached by Madison Tabor and Alexis Reed, started the new season off with a big 2-0 win against Babylon to open up the fall season. We only have 2 Greenport girls playing field hockey this season: Aly De La Noval and Jackie Martocchia. Aly De La Noval shared her hopes for this field hockey season with The Quill, “I am really looking forward to hopefully making it to the playoffs and if we do make it I wanna win.” Aly praised her team's new found chemistry and being able to work better as a team, “Compared to last year our stick work has gotten a lot better and we’re also passing a lot more which is great.”
Girls volleyball also picked up a big win early against Pierson with a clean sweep of 3-0. Greenports Lilly Corwin and Olivia Nockelin have been contributing in big ways all season and have been looking to continue competing with every team in our league. Olivia Nocklein said what she is looking forward to this season, “Im looking forward to building our team's friendship and chemistry and hopefully winning some games.” The girls are all looking forward to having a great season and Olivia is looking forward to getting more “good blocks”.
Our boys varsity soccer team is coming off a fantastic season last year, which included a final 4 appearance. They have been off to a good start so far this fall sports season. Our soccer team started off the year with a big win against Port Jefferson 3-2 to open the season. Milton Veliz, who has been off to a great start this season has 11 goals and counting so far. Ricky Campos and Luis Masin both received the honor of being named to Newsday’s Top 100 for soccer players on Long Island. Our soccer team is in a league this season with longtime rival Southold. The two teams faced off in an intense game for the first of 3 games this season. The first game was back and forth and went to the very end, but Greenport prevailed 1-0 with a goal by Milton Veliz. The soccer team is hoping to continue their success from last season and has had a strong start so far.
Our girls varsity soccer team only has 2 players from Greenport and they happen to be sisters: Cameron Stanton and Devin Stanton. Both of whom are headliners for the team this year. The girls have started off the season pretty strong with a whopping 7-0 win versus Amityville. Cameron Stanton scored 3 out of the 7 goals for the Porters. The team is very young this year and has a lot of potential. They are looking to achieve big things this year. Cameron Stanton listed what she is hoping for this season for her soccer team, “I think we have good potential this year, we have a few games that we need to win in order to get to the playoffs, which is ultimately the goal.”
All of our fall sports teams are underway here in Greenport and are all off to hot starts. Our fall sports season started in August and will go all the way until at least mid October, so there is plenty of time left in the season. The Porters are looking forward to hopefully making the playoffs in all of our sports and we are all looking forward to the success that our teams will hopefully achieve this season.
