In the absence of regular fall sports due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Greenport High School has opted instead to run an intramural sports program where student athletes will compete with each other rather than with other schools.
Greenport is doing this in conjunction with other high schools across Suffolk County. Suffolk County’s authority on high school athletics, as in other counties across the country, placed a county-wide ban on regular high-school sports due to the risk of outbreaks games between schools would pose.
The current intramural sports programs during the Fall include field hockey, soccer, track, and weight training. Greenport is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to start this program for student-athletes, which is more productive than the alternative of staying home. To be able to participate, social distancing and mask-wearing are required like in every other setting in the school.
This program runs Monday through Friday and is divided between “Gold Day” and “Purple Day” groups from 2:30 to 4:30. As it is essential during these hard times to get out and stay active, intramurals is a great way to do both.
