On Friday, September 5, Greenport High School revived a cherished tradition with its PTO back-to-school barbecue. The lively event featured performances by the Greenport a cappella group, while culinary delights were prepared by Jimmy Smiley and Justin Moore, including hot dogs, hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob, assorted salads, watermelon, a variety of chips, and delectable desserts. The atmosphere buzzed with energy as students of all ages enjoyed time on the playground, a visit from the Porter Pirate, and camaraderie with friends. Teacher, students, staff, administration, families, and community members all enjoyed a memorable afternoon together.
Generous donations from local businesses enhanced the occasion: The Greenporter Hotel provided backpacks and school supplies, while Stonybrook contributed new string backpacks—all available for students at no cost. Additionally, a face painting and temporary tattoo station added to the fun. Superintendent Beth Doyle and Student Council President Faith Welch both warmly welcomed the crowd.
The courtyard buzzed with excitement as students engaged in various games, with "Twister" emerging as a standout favorite. A highlight of the day was the staff races, where elementary and high school teachers faced off in inflatable Halloween costumes. These included ferocious sharks, a capybara, a snappy lobster, and t-rex among other hilarious costumes. In the end, the high school teachers edged out the elementary teachers for the victory
Overall, the event was a resounding success, showcasing community support and school spirit. This barbecue not only set the tone for a memorable school year but also reinforced the close-knit nature of the Greenport community. We look forward to continuing this beloved tradition in the future!
A big thank you goes out to the Greenport PTO for putting on such an amazing event.
