The snow is starting to melt, and the sun's coming out. It signals the end of the Porters' sports season. Although it's still cold and wet, it's the start of spring, the days get longer and the nights get shorter. This year, Greenport hosts a JV Baseball team, and the rest of the sports student athletes can participate in are Softball, Track, and Tennis that are being hosted in Southold, and Lacrosse, hosted in Mattituck. Let's finish this year strong. Good luck to our Porters!
Lacrosse
This year, there is only 1 varsity lacrosse player from Greenport. Davion Jamele is a sophomore at Greenport High School. Lacrosse is a combined sport with Greenport, Southold, and Mattituck, hosted in Mattituck and coached by Jeff Houser. Davion says,¨ That he is enjoying the season so far with his new team¨, He also says that his coaches and teammates have taught him proper form for defense and LSM( long stick midfielder). Davion is looking to improve this year, and his goals this season are to ¨get better at LSM, and to have one goal from defense.¨ Gooidluck to Davion and the rest of the lacrosse team.
Softball
There is only one softball player from Greenport, and that is Emily Rivas. The Softball JV team is hosted in southold. Emily is a sophomore here at greenport and it is her 7th year playing softball. Emily says ¨So far the season is going well. Though we've lost our first two games, the team is getting stronger overall and I'm confident we can bounce back and have a great season¨. Her goals are to ¨become better at my position and hit a homerun¨. Goodluck to the southold JV softball
Track
Track is hosted in Southold, Coached by Tim McArdle and Jeo Corrado. As expectations are held high for many of our runners like Devin Stanton, Ida R, Alfonso Garcia, and Zyaire Terry. They are hoping for a very successful season, having most qualify for states.
Baseball
Unfortunately, this year, the Greenport baseball team is competing at the JV level. Coached by Christopher Ryder and Harrison Finnerty, with team leaders seniors Luke Kohl and John Harvey, the team is looking forward to an improving and competitive, but fun season this spring. Some players to look out for this season is Juan Vivas(junior), Lukas Kohl(senior), and Jacob Warner(junior). The team has 12 games this season, 3 against each of these schools: Peirson, Shelter Island, Hampton Bays, and Southold. The porters won their first game against Peirson 5-1 and are looking forward to winning the next 2 in the series. The Porters' first home game is March 27. Come and support them at 430.
Tennis
Tennis is hosted in Southold, Mike Carver. There is only one participant from Greenport, who is Freshman Jack Meehan. Last year we had Kal playing. Others also use the courts when they are free to use, the sport is very community-based. Not many do it, it would be nice to see many more of our athletes participating in tennis in the coming years!
