A Tribute to Akira Toriyama

Very recently, on the 7th of March 2024, devastation and tragedy struck the hearts of millions when news broke out of the passing of Japanese manga author Akira Toriyama. Toriyama was famous for his stunning artwork, engaging storytelling, and loveable characters. He was most well known for his greatest works, Dr. Slump and the massively worldwide iconic series Dragon Ball.
Unfortunately, at the age of 68. According to The Public News he passed due to an acute subdural hematoma, a serious medical condition which causes a blood clot inside of the brain. Millions of people all over the internet are mourning his loss, as Akiria Toriyama is one of the most influential artists of all time.
You are probably most familiar with the anime Dragon Ball Z, whether you have seen it or not there is no denying that it is one of the most well known series throughout the entire world, and with great reason. Toriyama’s work was a massive success, from the awesome action packed adventures, to the iconic character designs, and emotional moments.
Dragon Ball was a huge inspiration to many people around the world defining the entire Shonen genre. Other Japanese artists who looked up to Toriyama would go on to make their own hit selling manga such as One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and many, many more. Tons of shows have a nod to Dragon Ball in some way, shape, or form. A popular example being the Super Saiyan transformation that Son Goku achieves in chapter 124.
For so long Dragon Ball has been inspiring many kids, from those who grew up in the 90s to today’s generation millions of children have been impacted by this series.
I know that you or someone you’ve known has tried to do the kamehameha at one point in your lifetime. Dragon Ball taught people the meaning of self improvement, progression, and what it means to be strong. Thus many have grown up to become great athletes, amazing artists, animators, and voice actors.
Toriyama has worked on many other projects too, he made character designs for video games such as Dragon Quest, Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger. Toriyama has also recently been working on a series based on his manga titled Sand Land before he succumbed to his illnesses.
His most recent and final major involvement in a project will be with the new upcoming series Dragon Ball: Daima which is set to release later this year. Although Toriyama is no longer here on earth his legacy will live on in the hearts of fans for many generations to come.
