As school begins and the fall sports season kicks off, many of our students participate in sports such as girls field hockey, girls volleyball, and the boys and girls varsity soccer. With homecoming week approaching, Porters are looking forward to many home games throughout all of the sports. In order to honor these sports, we decided to interview Porters who play a critical role in each of their particular sports.
The Girl’s Varsity Field Hockey team, hosted by Greenport and including Southold players as well, has had a rockier start to their season. With their record currently standing at 1-3, they are looking to improve in the later portion of the season. We decided to reach out to the captains of this team, Ava Cocheo, Jada Clark, and Sarahi Tzun Rodriguez, as well as sophomore Alessandra De la Noval about how they believe their season may improve in the future. When inquired about their record and how they may be better throughout the season, Clark responded, “We are going to start working together more and having better communication on the field”. De la Noval agreed with Clark stating she believes they will improve as the season continues. Futher, Cocheo mentions the mentality of the team going forward, “I have learned that my team plays better when we are all working together. Even against bigger schools, if we play as one, there will be a fair competition”. Finally, Tzun Rodriguez made a statement about how she motivates her team on and off the field, “I tell them to breathe in and out and that at the end of the day the score truly doesn’t matter. It will not define us as a team as long as we work together and bend our knees we will do good. #bendandsend”. Hopefully these motivational techniques, along with their determination will bring them as far as possible into the postseason.
Following the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team, is the Boys Varsity Soccer team. This team is one of the few remaining sports teams solely hosted at Greenport with all of the players being Porters. Although their season has not begun the way they had hoped, they are positive about the direction they are headed in the future. The team captains, senior Declan Crowley and junior, Ricky Campos, were interviewed on their experience with the sport, coupled with the role of team captain. Campos, when exploring why he became so passionate about the sport stated, “I have been playing since I was a little kid, up until the age I am now I have played it everyday. I also play for my travel team. It has been a big part of my life, and helps me to deal with everything. It is almost like a escape from reality, a therapy”. Campos has been on the varsity soccer team since 8th grade, and is a two-year captain. Crowley, also a team captain, was interviewed concerning the role that he plays as a captain, “We are the main voice on the field, picking everyone's heads up when they are down. We help everyone to understand their roles and positions on the field”. As the season continues, these boys will hopefully be able to motivate their teammates to get some goals, and wins some games.
The Girls varsity volleyball team has a two for two record so far. Greenport hosts the varsity volleyball team and is combined with Southold. Coach Gunther has taken some time off but is now back and coaching again, with the help of coach Capell who is the varsity assistant coach. We interviewed Senior Captain Hannah Santacroce and what she thinks about how her season is going so far “We started off the season pretty good but have struggled with communication a little bit, but are starting to communicate better and I believe that will improve as the season goes on”. We also interviewed Junior Lilly Corwin and asked her, “How do you think your season is going so far?'' she stated, “I think our season is going better than last year’s and we are more put together”. Both Corwin and Santacroce played on Long Island Blaze VolleyBall Club to enhance their skills.
Finally, the Girl’s Varsity soccer team, which is hosted by Mattituck, consists of many players from both Mattituck and Southold, with a lone player from Greenport. Junior, Cameron Stanton is currently the only varsity girls soccer player from Greenport. Their current record is 2-3, with the harder portion of their season already behind them. She states, “We have a very young team, and as they develop and learn to work together on a new team, we should find more success in the later part of our season”.
