After an exciting end to the fall season, where there were several playoff appearances, the porters are gearing up for an exciting winter season. Hosted by Southold High School, the Greenport athletes can participate in winter track. Winter track is coached by Coach Mcardle and Coach Carrado. Mattituck allows students to join the Mattituck wrestling team coached by Ryan Grebe. At All Star, the bowling alley in Riverhead, students can participate in the bowling team coached by Father Gill. Now at home, we host the Girls' basketball team, combined with Southold, the Boys' basketball team, sideline cheer, and the weight room. Hope to see all our students being active and staying “warm”.
Winter Track- Southold/Greenport’s winter track program is a joint high-school team that competes in Section XI’s indoor track & field season. The team trains through the cold months, often using the upgraded Southold outdoor track when indoor facilities are limited. In recent years, some of their meets have been hosted outdoors due to a lack of access to an indoor facility. Despite this, the program remains competitive, producing strong relay teams and athletes who advance to championship-level meets. Overall, the Southold/Greenport winter track is a dedicated, resilient program that continues to grow and develop talented runners, jumpers, and throwers. For example, Junior Devin Stanton is a highly anticipated runner and a promising runner. Let's wish the best of luck to Devin and all of our other runners.
Wrestling - Greenport wrestling, now part of the combined(MSG) program, is a long-running small-school team known for its cooperative structure and strong competitive spirit. The partnership was to give student-athletes from small districts a chance to compete, it has produced a handful of talented wrestlers and remains one of the area’s most successful shared athletic programs. In recent seasons, the team has continued to rise in competitiveness, with multiple wrestlers qualifying for county and state championships, highlighting both the program’s growth and the dedication of its athletes and coaches.
Bowling- Hosted by Riverheads Bowling Alley “All Star”, you take the bus from Greenport to Southold, then make the 30-minute-ish ride to Riverhead. Bowling allows you to make friends and maybe start a new hobby. Father Gill, the coach, teaches the players the basics of bowling, and then they get to bowl with whomever they choose for the duration of the practice. The players are allowed to purchase food and other miscellaneous items. A few words from Senior John Harvey about bowling, “ Bowling is more enjoyable because you get to combine with another school, and bowl for free!”
Sideline Cheer- words from Mrs. D “Coaching sideline cheer in our small school district has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me over the last decade. Like the buzz of the crowd alongside Coach Al’s Court, the girls’ passion for cheering on our basketball team is infectious. It’s been amazing to watch the program not only maintain its enthusiasm but also its popularity over the years. In a tight-knit community, every cheer and every routine feels more personal, and it’s amazing to see kids and adults joining in on the fun from the stands. The energy the girls bring to every game is contagious, and their commitment to keeping school spirit alive is what makes this program so special.”
Weight Room
Mr Reese is the reason the weight room is up and running; he always sought for the school to have a weight room. It started when he first got here, he cleaned it up, and then organised it to make it visually appealing.
After this effort, the athletic department began to revitalise the weight room. Firstly, by removing the locker room, then making it an official program students can sign up for, and Mr Reese would be the head coach. We also extend a big thank you to the custodial staff for the amazing transformational job they have been doing.
Girls Basketball
This year's girls varsity basketball team is led by the team's only senior, Francesca Santacroce. This year's team is a young team full of juniors and 2 8th graders. Some players to look forward to this year are the team captain, Senior Francesca Satacroce, junior Emily Manwaring, and junior Madison Smith. Francesca Santacroce is committing to Ave Maria University in East Naples, Florida, for basketball.
Last year, the varsity team had a record of 6-10, falling short of going to the playoffs. The Varsity team is coached by Ev Corwin. The team's first game is Tuesday, December 2nd, at Miller Place, but the home opener is Friday, December 5th, at Greenport High School at 6:15. Come and support your Greenport/Southold varsity team.
Boys Basketball-
Last year's varsity basketball team went a long way playing in the Class C regional. The Porters lost to Tuckahoe at Center Moriches High School for a chance to get a spot to go to the final 4 in Binghamton, New York. Last year, almost all of the starters graduated, leading the varsity team to be very young and full of potential, with only having 3 seniors on the team.
Some key players to look upon this season are senior Luke Kohl, Junior Matt Malinowski, and Junior Jesus Rios. The Porter's Varsity main coach is Justin Moore, and the assistant coach is Rodney Shelby. The Porters have potential and high hopes for this season. The Porters' first game is December 4th against Port Jefferson. Come down to Greenport High School at 6 pm to support your Greenport Porters varsity basketball team.
