Holiday Movie Review

Class of 2025

With the Christmas season now in full swing, one of the best ways to get into the Christmas spirit is with a Christmas movie. There are so many to choose from but here are my top 5 favorite Christmas  movies.

Home Alone hit the movie theater screens in 1990 quickly becoming a huge hit. It brought in $476,684,675 in sales. To this day Home Alone is still one of the most beloved Christmas movies watched by many families throughout the world. This movie is about 8 year old Kevin McCallister. The night before a family trip to Paris, where his family are to spend Christmas, he throws a fit causing him to be punished and sent to sleep in the attic. Out of anger he makes a wish that his family would disappear. Later that night the power goes out causing the alarm clocks to stop working. After panicking to get out of the house on time, Kevin's family manages to forget him. When he wakes up the next morning, he realizes his wish has come true.

At first he is happy, but then when two robbers try breaking into his house his mood changes quickly. The movie follows his attempts to try and save his family's home while realizing maybe he was wrong about wanting his family to disappear.

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas is another beloved Christmas movie. Released in 2000, it brought in $345 million dollars in sales and is immensely popular. The grinch is perceived as a scary, cranky, grumpy creature. The movie follows his storyline as he tries to ruin his town's, Whoville, Christmas celebrations due to his hatred for Christmas. He plots to steal all Christmas decorations and presents from every house in his town. As The Grinch places his plans into action, he ends up falling in love with the whole Christmas season and has a total change of heart. After uncovering his newfound love for Christmas, he races to repair all of the chaos and entropy he caused across the town.

The PolarExpress was released in 2004 and earned $315 million. The movie follows the storyline of a boy around christmas time. As he is maturing in age he stops believing in Santa/ the Christmas spirit. One night while going to sleep he hears a train whistle blow. He goes outside of his house out of curiosity.   He is greeted by a conductor telling him to get on the train. He then embarks on an extraordinary journey to the North Pole. Through this movie you can see his beliefs about christmas change and the journey influence those changes. The journey teaches him the importance of believing.

Elf is an extremely popular movie that made its debut in 2003. It brought in $225,097,437 worldwide. Elf starts in the north pole when a human ,“Buddy the elf” accidentally grows up around other elfs. When he finds out the truth about his parents and how he does not belong in the North Pole he decides to set out on an adventure to New York City in search of his dad. The movie follows his adventures into this “new world” and how he manages to build a relationship with his father and save Christmas.

The Santa Clause came out in 1994 and became very popular instantly.  That popularity has not faded. Making $190 million in the box office it has become a classic Christmas movie. The movie starts off with a dad (Scott) in a heated custody battle. One night he startles a man in a Santa costume, who is on his roof. Scott must now take his place at Santa. He is magically taken to the North Pole where he is greeted by elfs telling him he has to take over  as Santa. When he wakes up the next morning he believes it's just a dream, but over the next few months he begins to resemble Santa. He then realized it wasn't a dream. He has to learn how to adapt with his new life (and new work) while still being a father.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and hopefully these movies helped! Snuggle up with a cup of hot chocolate and a blanket and enjoy some of their suggestions or any other Christmas movie!
