A Porter’s Journey: Celebrating Mr. Mike Sage
This month, we dive deep with a true Porter, Mr. Mike Sage, a proud graduate of Greenport High School, Class of 1993. Driven by a strong sense of community, education, and personal growth, Mr. Sage fondly reflects on his high school days, recognizing the significant experiences that shaped his path to success.
Mr. Sage's high school experience was largely defined by his dedication to sports. An accomplished athlete, he participated in football, basketball, and baseball, excelling in each discipline. One of his most cherished memories is being part of the varsity basketball team during his junior year (1991-1992). The thrill of competition and the lessons learned in discipline and leadership from this experience have left a lasting impact on him.
Beyond athletics, Mr. Sage was actively involved in various clubs at Greenport. He participated in the Interact Club, Spanish Club, and Outing Club, where he forged strong connections with peers and teachers. These experiences not only enhanced his leadership skills but also instilled a sense of community that he continues to carry with him today.
Academically, Mr. Sage found his passion in English and History. He credits two of his favorite teachers, Mr. McEvoy and Mr. Connolly, for fostering his love for learning. The skills he developed in these subjects extended beyond the classroom, laying the groundwork for his higher education journey at Roger Williams University, where he majored in History, and later at Dowling College in Oakdale, Long Island, where he earned a master's degree in Special Education.
Among the many lessons learned at Greenport, the importance of community stands out. Mr. Sage reflects on how his time at the school instilled in him a deep sense of pride and belonging. When asked about his greatest accomplishment, he proudly mentions his career and his role as the best uncle he can be. His commitment to family and professional success exemplifies the values he embraced during his time at Greenport High School.
Mr. Sage's advice to current students is simple yet profound: "Time is a very scarce resource, use it wisely." This message underscores the significance of prioritizing what truly matters in life—family, career, and personal growth.
Mr. Sage's journey from Greenport High School to his current success highlights the power of community, education, and dedication. His experiences as a student-athlete, active club member, and passionate learner have shaped him into the person he is today—someone who values time, education, and relationships. Greenport provided him with the foundation for success, and he continues to carry that legacy in every aspect of his life.
