In a world where kindness can sometimes feel rare, initiatives like the "More Good Today" remind us of the profound difference we can make in each other's lives. Mary Latham, the project's founder, wanted to help all of the students do more good for those around them.
Using a generous donation to her foundation, students were tasked with writing a proposal for how they would spend the money. These proposals ranged from deeply personal to community-minded endeavors.
Once this grant was approved, students were given the money to actually do more good. This project provided students with opportunities to help those important to them, and many have shared their experiences and reflections on what it means to give back.
One student expressed her gratitude for the chance to assist someone dear to her—her sister. “Participating in the ‘Do More Good’ campaign allowed me to do something nice for my sister,” she said. The joy of seeing her sister's surprised smile was a highlight, but what truly resonated with her was the realization that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.
During the holiday season, doing something kind for someone else can be an incredibly fulfilling experience. One student reflected on their efforts to bring Christmas gifts to a friend and her child, emphasizing how such simple gestures can profoundly impact lives.“It was a reminder of how much difference a small act can make,” they shared. The experience reinforced the importance of community and compassion, highlighting that the gifts were not just material items but symbols of support and care. “It’s about showing someone that they’re seen, valued, and cared for,” they added.
The act of giving filled the student with a sense of purpose and gratitude, reaffirming the interconnectedness we all share. This experience not only brought joy to their friend but also inspired the student to seek out more opportunities to uplift others. “Even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact,” they concluded.
Another student shared a touching experience about helping their grandmother. “Doing something good for someone else made me very happy,” they noted. The simple act of giving not only benefited their grandmother but also reinforced the joy of selflessness, especially during the holiday season. The student emphasized how important it was to show someone they are valued and cared for, stating, “It reminded me how interconnected we all are.”
The spirit of giving extended beyond family for these students. One participant reflected on their decision to donate to the local animal shelter. “I got my dog from there, and they helped him recover from being sick,” they shared. The experience of donating made them feel fulfilled and inspired to continue helping others, showcasing the ripple effect of kindness in the community.
Additionally, support from the "More Good Today" initiative allowed another student to contribute to John’s Place, a local charity that provides and safe and warm place for those living on the streets to stay. They felt deeply grateful for the opportunity to think of others before themselves, reinforcing the idea that even small acts can bring a sense of purpose.
With aspirations of becoming a child psychologist, one student was dedicated to helping kids in need. “It has always been my dream to help others, and this project has allowed me to take meaningful action toward that goal.” Understanding the challenges of financial struggles firsthand, the student emphasized the importance of lending a hand to others. “I know what it’s like to face daunting situations, and being able to offer even a little bit of help feels incredible,” they noted.
The support provided by the project has not only empowered them to assist others but has also reinforced their commitment to a career focused on making a positive impact. "Having this chance to help people truly means the world to me," one student concluded.
These stories highlight a crucial understanding: doing good for others is not just about grand gestures. It’s about the small, thoughtful actions that can uplift individuals and strengthen communities. Whether it’s surprising a loved one with a gift, supporting an animal shelter, or helping those in need, the impact of kindness can be far-reaching. As we continue to share and celebrate these moments, let’s remember that every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to a greater sense of community and compassion.
The Quill staff would like to thank Mary Latham for reminding us all that no matter what our circumstances are, we can all do “More Good Today.”
