September 25-28, 2023

We had another successful week of learning and fun here in Early Intervention Pre-K (EIP)! Fall is in the air and the students loved playing outside and exploring in our little backyard space. The addition of our new sandbox has been a big hit!

I am still waiting for the green light to start posting pictures, but we are still snapping them and will be giving you a huge photo dump when it's time!

Orange Shirt Day

We recognized orange shirt day on Thursday by wearing orange to school. Orange shirt day is a wonderful opportunity to begin age appropriate conversations around reconciliation. We did this by reading the book, With Our Orange Hearts. We also decorated hearts for our school's upcoming Heart Garden.

Heart gardens honour residential school survivors and their families, as well as the legacy of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Each heart represents the memory of a child lost to the residential school system, and the act of planting represents that individual’s commitment to finding their place in reconciliation. The hearts will be hung on the fence in front of our school sometime this upcoming week!

Thank You!

A special thank you to Selena White for making us play dough this past week! The kids love playing with play dough and they were excited to have a fresh new batch. If you are interested in helping out by making play dough for our class, feel free to sign up by clicking here. Making play dough is surprisingly easy and only needs six ingredients! I have a great recipe if you need one, just let me know and I can pass it along.

Snap Painting

Each week the students have the opportunity to engage in a variety of art and craft projects. Arts and crafts are a great way to engage your senses while strengthening your hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Last week we put out snap painting, this exciting way of painting involves painting elastics that are stretched over a cookie sheet, and then snapping them so they splatter on the paper below.

Fall Song

We sing the same song or recite the same finger play all week in EIP. When students engage in the same song or finger play repeatedly, they gain confidence to participate and start to build both expressive and receptive language skills. This past week we sang a simple little song about leaves, "The Leaves are Falling Down." I will share the words below incase you want to sing it at home as well.

The Leaves are Falling Down

(Sung to: Farmer in the Dell)

The leaves are falling down
, (children hold arms high and wiggle fingers like leaves falling from branches)

The leaves are falling down,

Red, yellow, green, and brown
,

The leaves are falling down.

Calm Down Tools

We have been learning about different feelings here in EIP. So far we have learned about happy, sad, and mad. With that, we have begun to learn that when we are feeling sad, angry, or mad, there are different "calm down tools" we can access to make us feel better.

The tools we have learned so far include using a breathing ball, breathing with the music or "breathing bowl," asking for a hug, and doing puffer fish breathing. We will be practicing these tools (and other tools as well) throughout the school year and supporting your children to select a calm down tool during moments of big feelings.  I have attached the puffer fish video below so you can access this tool at home as well.

Coming Up!
