September 12-15

First Week Success!

We had a wonderful first full week here in pre-kindergarten. Friendships are starting to form and everyone is settling into the routine of coming to school.

I am still waiting for the green light to post pictures of your children on the blog. If you have not yet completed your child's verification forms please take a minute to do so. All of the forms need to be completed before the FOIP list is generated and I can start posting pictures of all our PK cuteness on the blog!

Fall Sensory Play!

This fall sensory bin was a hit with everyone. This bin allowed the children to strengthen their fine motor skills as they scooped, sorted, and dumped out a variety of different fall items.

Pete the Cat

We had another Pete filled week over here! We read Pete the Cat: I Love my White Shoes as well as Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School Shoes. We followed Pete's shoe theme to engage in some messy, sensory art and experienced both painting shoes as well as painting WITH shoes as part of our learning center play.

Silly Songs

On Thursday we tried out some pretty silly songs, the students loved dancing, singing, and doing the actions as they developed language skills and body awareness. I will link the songs below incase you want to do them at home too!

Feelings

We spent some time talking about our feelings this past week. We listed all the different feelings our bodies can experience and talked about how each and every feeling is okay to have.

Throughout the year I will be helping your children understand that while all feelings are okay, sometimes when our feelings get too big we need help to make ourselves feel better. We can do this by accessing different regulating tools that we will learn about and practice regularly.

On Wednesday we learned about our first regulating tool, the "breathing ball." We use the breathing ball to breathe in and out as the ball gets bigger and smaller. The breathing ball is kept in a safe place in our classroom and can be accessed anytime someone needs support with regulating their emotions.

Open Them, Shut Them

We did this simple little finger play last week. Students love finger plays as they are predictable, repetitive, and a fun way to learn language, engage in social interactions, and practice different fine and gross motor skills. Here are the words to the poem in case you would like to try it at home as well.

Open them, shut them, open them, shut them, give a little clap!

Open them, shut them, open them, shut them, lay them in your lap.

Roll them, roll them, roll them, roll, them, roll them just like this.

Shake them, shake them, shake them, shake them, make a little fist!

Creep them, creep them, creep them, right up to your chin.

Open your mouth, but don't let them in!

The Countries of Our Classroom

Thank you to all of the parents who shared their family heritage so we could talk about the countries of our classroom. This conversation was done in an age appropriate manner and mostly focused on what flags represent each child's family. Everyone was excited to learn that the Canada flag represents all of us! It is heart-warming to look at the display and see the wide diversity of families that belong to our PK program!

It is not too late to share your child's heritage with me! If you did not send in the countries that represent your family please feel free to still do so. We will be happy to add any more flags that we learn about as the year progresses.
