We had oodles of dino-fun this past week! From dinosaur crafts to feeding baby dinosaurs in the gym, it was one prehistoric themed activity after the next!
An Introduction to Cutting!
On Monday, our four-year-olds were introduced to cutting and scissors safety. We talked about how to position our hands and arms when cutting, as well as how to safely handle a pair of scissors. We then gave cutting a try by snipping straws. Snipping is the first step when learning how to cut. And straws are very exciting to snip as they fly all over the room with each snip.
This is the poem I used to talk about how to position our hands:
Fingers on the bottom.
Thumb on top,
Open the mouth,
And go chop, chop, chop!
Paleontologists, Hard at Work!
After watching a little video of paleontologists digging up dinosaur fossils, I challenged the students to do a dinosaur discovery of their own! The students were fully engaged as they used water, eye droppers, and salt to try and free baby dinosaurs out of their ice blocks.
Dinosaur Food: A Lesson on Citrus Fruits
On Wednesday, we talked about the different kinds of food that the dinosaurs might have eaten. Some students mentioned that dinosaurs ate leaves and trees. I asked them if they think the dinosaurs ever ate the fruit growing on these trees? This conversation led us into our citrus fruit investigation.
We learned about three citrus fruits this day: lemons, oranges, and red grapefruits. We explored with the fruits, smelled them, tested if they would sink or float, cut them open to see what colour was inside, and then, we even had the chance to taste them! Some of our students took a bite, others licked the fruit, and some bravely gave it a poke. All of these actions are wonderful and encouraged when children are introduced to a new food. We talked about how citrus fruits give us vitamin C, and how this important vitamin helps us to stay healthy and fight away germs that might make us sick.
The lemon was so sour!
Show and Tell
On Thursday, we had our first round of show and tell. The students were eager to share their items with their classmates. I was so proud of how everyone did, both in sharing their item, and also in listening to the others while they waited for their turn! Show and tell is a fun way to work on public speaking, turn taking, and listening to others.
Painting With Dinosaurs!
On Friday, our three-year-olds enjoyed painting with dinosaurs. This sensory experience was a fun way to strengthen our hand-eye coordination. We also stomped our dinosaurs to the beat of the song "we are the dinosaurs" which turned this activity into a musical experience as well!
Mark Your Calendars!
I am so excited to announce that our occupational therapists will be offering some Family Orientated Programming Sessions (FOPS) for parents to attend while their children are at school. These information sessions are optional, touch on a variety of topics, and can be attended by parents or guardians right here at the school, while your child is attending class! Please see the attached poster for more details. Everyone is welcome!
