RBES Spell-A-Thon Another Huge Success!!

We would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who participated in the RBES Annual Spell-a-thon. Once again our Robina Baker family came through with flying colours! A HUGE THANK YOU to the Devon Home Hardware, Tim Hortons, Florida Pizza, Independent, Dominos, Marci’s, IGA and Dairy Queen for sponsoring our program.- it was very much appreciated. Our students were very excited to spell their words to win prizes. Congratulations to Mrs. Suter’s Grade 2 class for getting the most 100% in the school. Mrs. Tewitz and Mrs. Forchuk Grade 3 class won the top fundraiser prize and they get to celebrate with a pizza party. Our RBES community raised just over $14,450 with this event and that will go a long way to supporting health and wellness programs, field trips, swimming, the learning commons and cultural events at RBES. A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Forchuk and Mrs. Tewitz for organizing this awesome event for our school and thank you to Mrs. Dewar and Mrs. Delbridge for helping to collect and organize the pledges and prizes! KW and PK will get their prizes this week.

THIS MONTH'S ASSEMBLY THEME:

KINDNESS & CARING

We wrapped up our kindness and caring theme with a fabulous presentation from 2A/2B! Our pizza with the Principals Winners were drawn and Congratulations goes to: Brayden (KG), Bentley (1C), Bishop (2C) and Sami (4B). Somehow we missed taking the picture! Our lunch together will be on Tuesday, March 5. We also missed taking a picture of our Wristband Challenge Winner (too much excitement I guess) -- Congratulations to Nate FS (4C)!

Week 17: March 1, 2019

PINK SHIRT DAY!

RBES students proudly wore pink on Feb. 27 and chose to be kind and stand up against bullying! Their many acts of kindness throughout the month were greatly appreciated and noticed everywhere. Keep being Kind RBES and thank you for your awesome school spirit to spread the Kindness message. You can check out some pictures in the Dispatch or click here for more photos: PINK SHIRT DAY PICS

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS:

RBES students were challenged to focus on doing Random Acts of Kindness for the last couple of weeks. When a staff member spotted them being kind, they were invited to sign their name anywhere on the chart. They filled this one up and there is another one already 1/3 filled. Instead of drawing the grid squares from a hat, we did a keychain toss and whichever squares they landed on are the prize winners. These will be shared tomorrow during announcements. We have had a number of visitors to the school tell office staff how kind the students at Robina are. Holding doors open, helping to pick up dropped items, making pictures for others, giving compliments and sharing hugs are just a few things that were "noticed" around the building. Well done everyone and Keep Being Kind!

New Session of BOKS

We will be offering a second session of BOKS starting March 5! The BOKS Program (Build Our Kids’ Success) promotes the impact that physical activity has on a child’s mind, body and spirit. The program aims to get elementary school aged children moving in the morning to help ready their brains for a day of focused learning. BOKS was founded on the principal that ACTIVE KIDS = ACTIVE MINDS. Research has shown that exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains. We encourage you to learn more about the BOKS program at www.bokskids.ca

You can register here until Monday at noon!

Meet Leo . . .

Leo took his first steps into the world of dance at age of eight with a Cuban group that was part of the house of culture in Havana called “Dew Drops.” At a very young age, Leo had an intense passion for dance and participated as a principal dancer in multiple choreographies.

At the age of thirteen, Leo was accepted as a student by two prestigious Cuban companies – Banra-rra and Narciso Medina. In 2003, he was accepted as a student at the National College of Art and Music Shows (ENAEM) after passing a rigorous examination of attitude and aptitude. During his stay in ENAEM, he was featured in events on a national level such as the “Danzandos” and was the recipient of the award for best choreography.

Leo’s career with ENAEM turned a then talented young dancer into a professional with extensive knowledge of traditional Cuban and international dances, including Afro-Cuban, Afro-Haitian, ballet and contemporary dance such as Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Pilon, Mozambique, Rumba, Salsa, Son, Guaguanco, Columbia, Yambú, Spanish dance, and Tango.

For his brilliant work at ENAEM, Leo was awarded a diploma of distinguishment and hand- chosen by one of the most prestigious dance and musical companies of Cuba: Santiago Alfonso, whose principal was the director of the Tropicana. During Leo’s three years with Santiago Alfonso, he performed roles as a soloist and in group ballets at various national performances.

Before moving to Canada, Leo performed with DanzaCUBA where he was able to grow even further as a soloist and develop his skills as choreographer and dance teacher.

Leo started Cuban Movements Dance School in 2013 to share his passion and love of dance with the community. Since 2013 Leo has traveled across Canada and internationally to participate and compete in Expo Latino, Salsa Congress Saskatoon, Salsa Congress Calgary, Winnipeg International Salsa Festival, Salsa Congress Vancouver, Salsa Congress Los Angeles, Salsa Congress Las Vegas and the World Latin Dance Cup in Miami.
