B. Bus Incident
1. In the event of a bus accident, the school will be notified by:
a) bus company
b) police
c) parent or community member
In the event that the school is notified first, it will:
a) call the police
b) call the bus company
c) ambulance
2. Person taking the phone call should determine:
a) bus number
b) location of accident
c) nature and extent of any obvious injury involved
3. Crisis Team Chair will be informed of situation and will decide if a Crisis Team meeting should take place.
4. Parents will be called by Communications Coordinator (whether or not there are any injuries) and told there has been an accident. Parents can come to the school to await further information or wait for a follow-up phone call. If students are to be transported to drop off sites parents will be informed so that they can await their children
5. If the accident is a minor in nature and does not involve injury in the opinion of the police, driver, ambulance attendants and school personnel at site of accident, the students will be transported (on the original bus or a substitute bus) to their destinations. Parents will be allowed to transport students home from the accident scene if there are no injuries and school personnel can verify identity of parent. School personnel at site of accident must record which students leave the site with parents or on a bus.
6. If the bus accident involves injuries:
a) The school will send one of the school personnel at the site of the accident to the hospital with the students. The school will assist hospital staff in contacting the parents. The other school person will remain at the scene
b) All uninjured students will be released to their parents at the accident site or transported in a substitute bus to drop off sites to be collected by parents. A record will be kept of students collected by parents or taken by bus. The Communication Coordinator will inform parents of the drop off sites where to collect their children.
