All community members are welcomed to informally discuss concerns or questions regarding resources and materials with the librarian, curriculum coordinator and/or curriculum area leaders/team leaders.
If a concern is unresolved, a formal Request for Reconsideration of an Educational Resource Form can be submitted.
After a form is submitted, a committee will be formed to consider the concern consisting of the librarian(s), divisional principal and other colleagues as deemed appropriate.
The committee will:
Read, view, and/or otherwise examine the challenged resource.
Survey the challenged resource in professional reviewing sources.
Determine to what extent the material supports the curriculum and the school’s mission, beliefs and policy.
Weigh the merits against the concern to form an opinion on the resource as a whole.
Prepare a written summary of the recommendation.
The resource will not be removed until a decision is made; however, access to the challenged resource can be restricted to the child (or children) of the parent/guardian raising the concern, if they wish.
The principal shall notify the person who raised the concern of the decision, sharing the committee’s findings. If the decision was made to keep the resource an explanation will be provided. If the concern is found to be upheld, the principal will acknowledge it and make recommended changes.
The Head of School shall consider any concerns that remain unresolved. Final decisions regarding educational resources rest with the Head of School.
