Frankfurt International School encourages the production and distribution of printed and digital materials consistent with the mission, beliefs, and policies of the school.
The objectives of producing student publications such as an upper school newspaper, a creative arts magazine, and a school yearbook, include but are not limited to:
– providing information;
– stimulating dialogue and debate among students, teachers, administration, and parents;
– chronicling the activities of the school;
– exposing the students to methods of gathering, processing and preparing information for publication;
– teaching students how to deal responsibly with controversy; and
– providing students a forum for communication
Responsibility for the materials published:
Students should be encouraged to submit contributions of all kinds to the appropriate publications. The criteria for selection is:
– the relevance of the subject matter to the lives and interests of the readers;
– the quality of the writing;
– the reliability of the information; and
– the standard of research
The school explicitly eschews censorship of published materials. Students must be free to express ideas and views in a clear and authentic style. While the advisors provide guidance and help set and maintain standards, they intervene only when the style of writing and content of an article or illustration does not meet fundamental standards of responsible journalism. In particular, the dignity and privacy of individuals must not be violated by what is published.
No anonymous contributions shall be accepted for publication. The author or photographer should be credited; the faculty advisor, however, reserves the right to withhold the identity of the contributor. Students designated as editors shall examine all submitted material and make recommendations to the faculty advisor as to their suitability for publication. Should material be judged inappropriate, the faculty advisor and the student editor shall request that the contributor reexamine the contribution and make revisions.
The person with responsibility for each publication is the principal to whom the faculty advisor for the publication reports. The final decision on the inclusion of all material rests with the principal or his/her designee.
