The FIS home learning policy offers guidelines to motivate and engage our community of learners. The policy encourages students to take ownership of their learning outside school, building understandings, applying knowledge and skills beyond the classroom as a foundation to pursue their interests. The policy acknowledges the importance of family time. Providing parents and students with flexibility in completing home learning helps ensure balance between school and home life.
In partnership with parents our goal is to inspire students to develop their intellect, creativity and character through meaningful learning opportunities. Home learning activities should be dynamic, inquiry-driven, and should develop independence, adaptability, social responsibility and international mindedness.
Our home learning policy provides students the opportunity to:
lead a healthy and active lifestyle
contribute positively to family life, society and the environment
nurture curiosity
pursue individual and personal interests by practicing and refining their personal talents, skills and interests
build on learning that took place in school
learn how to manage their time
Home learning at FIS:
is age appropriate
promotes reading for pleasure and interest
will prepare for, reinforce, support or continue learning begun in school
is engaging, meaningful, significant and relevant
utilizes the skills and understandings the students already have
may involve collaboration
receives meaningful feedback
offers learner choice
Roles and responsibilities of the teacher, parent, student
Teachers are accountable for adhering to the FIS Home Learning Policy and the divisional guidelines and regulations.
Students are responsible to engage in the home learning and practice independence in their growth. If they find home learning too challenging they should seek parent or teacher assistance.
Parents are advocates for their children. As such they support them in completing their home learning independently by assisting with self-management skills. This includes finding the place, time and resources to complete assignments at home.
