Bingo and a Quiz 2024

A big thank you to Tesco’s Communities Champion and the staff from Musselburgh Grammar who generously donated prizes for this year’s cross generation project. The event was organised by Mme Dreon-Goold’s Personal Development class as part of their national assessment.

The elderly residents of Mansfield Court Sheltered Housing were entertained to 3 games of Bingo and a quiz on Scotland in the 1960s. Codey, Hayden, Aleesha and Thomas had also baked scones and took part in some “Bingo Lingo Banter” with their captive audience.

It was a pleasure to see the residents rewarding our pupils with a standing ovation.

A very happy Margaret  who won one of the prizes for the second year in a row! One lucky lady…

LEVEL 6 FIRST AID

Well done to all 11 pupils achieving the following First Aid qualifications:

Emergency First Aid at Work   SCQF Level 6

First Aid for Mental Health Awareness   SCQF Level 4

     Remembrance Day

Summer and Ailsa paid tribute to the Fallen of MGS on Monday at 11am. Katie represented MGS the previous day at the Service at the Mall.

Horse Riding

Two of our SfL pupils will both be shown on the livestream for the RDA National Virtual Horse Rising Competition tomorrow afternoon. They will be on the RDA National YouTube page @4.30pm and 4.54pm respectively.

What a great achievement for both our riders.

Year group attendance

Improving attendance to improve attainment is one of our school improvement priorities this year and we expect pupils’ attendance to be at least 90%.  We are tracking pupils’ attendance carefully throughout the session and more information about our attendance strategy will follow. I hope parents and carers find this weekly update on each year group's attendance useful.

S1:      92 %

S2:      88 %

S3:      89%

S4:      89%

S5:      93%

S6:      92%

    Community Music Performance

On Friday November 8th I took Hannah Scott (S5 piano), Milo Egan (S5 cello), Max Dignan

(S5 piano), Tess Devlin (S4 trombone), Astrid Morris (S4 piano) and Libby Henderson (S3

piano) to perform to the residents.

The performers played a varied programme of music by Felix Mendelssohn, Leonard Bernstein, Friedrich Kuhlau, Irving Berlin, Michael  Proksch, Maria Symanowska  and  Ludovico Einaudi.  We were treated to juice and snacks afterwards and enjoyed chatting to the residents and meeting Lucy, one of the dogs that spends time there sometimes! Thank you to Harbour House once again!

Head Pupils Primary visits

Ailsa and Summer visited Whitecraig Primary School this week to speak to the primary Seven class as part of Ailsa’s strategic role focusing on strengthening our links with our associated primary schools.

Ms Queen, Whitecraig’s P7 teacher emailed Ailsa and I to say:

'I wanted to extend a huge thank you for taking the time to speak with the P7 pupils yesterday about their upcoming transition to high school. Your support  and insights made it a valuable experience for them.'

'I was especially impressed with the confidence and warmth that both you and Summer displayed in your presentation—you both represented MGS brilliantly and set a fantastic example.'

Here is some of the feedback directly from the P7s:

 “10 out of 10 stars”

“Good information from them.”

“They were good at explaining stuff.”

“Really kind and they answered all of our questions.”

“We’d love to have them back.”

Thank you again for your time and effort; it made a real difference.

Very well done to Ailsa and Summer for a good job well done! They are very much looking forward to visiting the other primary schools to speak to the P7s who will be joining us in August 2025.

Head Team

Hi everyone!

Prelims start in just under two weeks… daunting for sure, however we are lucky in our school to have support all around us with our teachers constantly offering advice to us during this stressful yet rewarding time.

We had the Pathways and Employability evening last Wednesday. It was very interesting and informative to speak to all the different employers, colleges and universities, as well as some teachers too. Overall the night left many students and parents feeling at ease with ideas of the future. Thank you to all of the employers, college and university staff that came! It was great to meet so many different people.

That's all for this week!

Summer, Ailsa, Katie.

Self evaluation programme

Our programme of faculty reviews continued this week in Humanities. The Review Team consisted of Mrs Watson, DHT, Mr Harpham, CL Mathematics,  Mrs Hamilton-Wylie, Teacher of CDT, Mrs Illingsworth, PT Social Subjects at Preston Lodge High School, and me. We visited over 40 classes and held a BGE and Senior Focus Group as well as staff focus group. It was a pleasure to see and speak to so many pupils who thoroughly enjoy their experience in the faculty.

Our updated One Stop Shop for Study Skills is now updated for this session and included in this email as the links to each site are live.
