These are well-paced and plotted tales set in a world similar to Earth, but in which magic exists. It is a world inhabited by Orcs, Elves, Dragons and other beings and creatures from folklore and mythology, as well as humans, who are the descendants of people from the time of Arthur Pendragon, who were transported to this world through a magical portal.
These books follow chronologically on from each other, mainly following several squires who are thrown together via dire circumstances, and who advance to become Knights due to their involvement and heroic deeds in several battles. One of these Knights is Gareth Arban, whose future becomes linked to a magical relic known as the Dragonskull, after he inadvertently touches and activates a Way Stone containing the memories of the first Magistri who lived 500 years ago, which leads both him and his fellow knights into conflicts with the Priestesses of the Heptarchy who are also determined to find it.
There is a good balance of characterisation and action in these novels, which are set in a medieval type world, full of orcs, elves and halflings, where magic is practised by all the races, many of which use it to reanimate the dead, but most especially the Orcs, to guard their lands and buildings and act as labourers.
War comes for an unprepared squire.
Gareth Arban wants to become a knight and win glory enough to marry the girl he loves.
But death is the other face of glory.
When invaders sweep out of the north wielding mighty dark magic, it will take more than a squire’s bravery to stop them…
