I came across the original book while browsing through the suggested reads on Amazon. My first thought was that it was a comedy as the title sounds like it could be the first line of a joke. However, after noting the star rating and the number of reviews this was based on, I read the story synopsis followed by several of the reviews, all of which were glowing in their praise, which left me very intrigued by the premise of the story and so purchased the book.
I am very glad to say that intrigue paid dividends, this is one of the most delightful, intriguing and interesting stories I have read, which revolves around a Golem, who has just been brought to life just days before arriving in New York, and a Djinni, who has just been released from a 1000 year imprisonment. Both have to adapt to the world they find themselves in, find shelter, work and make friends while also hiding their true natures. All this is set against a background mystery of who imprisoned the Djinni, the circumstances of which he has no memory, but the events of which are teasingly revealed through several flashbacks spaced throughout the story and are finally revealed in a most unexpected and explosive manner, though that is not the end of the story, which still has several more interesting twists and turns to keep your attention.
Then I learnt that there was a second book, which of course I just had to buy. This one delves deeper into the lives and relationships of Chava and Ahmad, as well as how they become aware and deal with the realisation that the people around them are ageing, while they are not. Again this is a wonderful story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking as it spans over fifteen years, mixing in some notable events, though not in an overbearing manner, that have consequences for some of the characters. The conclusion, as with the first book is highly gratifying, but also leaves open the possibility of further books and adventures.
One cold night, two newcomers emerge onto the streets of 1899 New York, and it is never the same again.
But these two are more than strangers to this land, they are strangers to this world. From the depths of folkloric history come Chava the golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi and Ahmad, a djinni, born in the ancient Syrian desert and trapped in an old copper flask released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.
Two companions who were never meant to be released, and never meant to meet. And when they do, their opposing natures will be sealed by a special bond, but one that is threatened by watching eyes, roaming owners and a misunderstanding world.

2020Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human—just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined—but they’re not yet certain of what they mean to each other.
Both Chava and Ahmad have changed the lives of the people around them. Park Avenue heiress Sophia Winston, whose brief encounter with Ahmad left her with a strange illness that makes her shiver with cold, travels to the Middle East to seek a cure. There she meets Dima, a tempestuous female jinni who’s been banished from her tribe. Back in New York, in a tenement on the Lower East Side, a little girl named Kreindel helps her rabbi father build a golem they name Yossele—not knowing that she’s about to be sent to an orphanage uptown, where the hulking Yossele will become her only friend and protector.
Spanning the tumultuous years from the turn of the twentieth century to the beginning of World War I, The Hidden Palace follows these lives and others as they collide and interleave. Can Chava and Ahmad find their places in the human world while remaining true to each other? Or will their opposing natures and desires eventually tear them apart—especially once they encounter, thrillingly, other beings like themselves?
