This series has a whole new cast of characters but is set in the same world as Death Before Dragons, so some of the characters from that series pop up here too.
Matti is half-dwarf and primarily interested in her work of renovating old houses, but she also likes to help her friends and neighbours out if they encounter problems, which the authorities tend to look on as vigilantism.
The perspective of this tale is from Matti's point of view, which includes a strong dislike of the military, which is due to personal experiences from her early childhood, which initially colours her perceptions of Val and Willard, who make appearances throughout the books.
As always with Lindsay's books, the personalities of the characters are excellent and abound with her trademark humour and snarkiness. The plot is also well thought out and contains twists and mysteries enough to keep you fully engaged.
Seattle native Matti Puletasi has the strength of a bear, the stamina of an ox, and a magical hammer inherited from her dwarven mother.
She’s happy renovating homes and occasionally thumping bad guys until she learns of a mysterious artifact hidden under the house she’s working on. Everybody from humans to orcs to werewolves wants it, and they’re willing to kill to get it. Things go from bad to worse when someone frames her for murder.
The only person interested in helping her is a haughty elf assassin from another realm. He’s handsome, powerful, and deadly, but he’s got an agenda of his own. She dare not trust him—or be attracted to him.
But if she can’t clear her name, the assassin will be the least of her worries.
