The first book in this series “Wizards First Rule” is one I had seen in a book store several years before I actually bought it. At the time I was intrigued by the title and the synopsis, but not enough to buy it.
When I eventually did buy it, I had several books already on my TBR list which equalled about a year's worth of books to read at the rate I was reading them, but being like most readers I was always looking for something else to read and having more books to read was only a good thing.
I had read the first five books and had purchased the next four in the series prior to emigrating to Thailand, but was unable to read the latter due to lack of time, so like most of my other books, I donated these to a local charity shop.
As it turned out my departure from England was delayed by a few months, which meant I could have read a couple of these books if I hadn’t donated them, but since I had I repurchased them, but this time as kindle books and thus started my digital collection.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the books in the series, that includes the prequel and the novella, though book four “The Temple of the Winds” was one that I found dragged a bit.
The majority of the books cover a magical war that has simmered for over three thousand years and is then reignited, following Richards actions in book three, with all the horrifying consequences that bring’s, so the writing is definitely gritty, dark and quite explicit, especially the latter ones, so these would not be to everyone's taste.
Earlier this year (2021) I was delighted to find that all of the audio versions of The Sword of Truth books had been uploaded to YouTube, so I have been working my way through them while doing work around the house. The Narrator for the first twelve books is very good and they are a joy to listen to, though it has to be said you become aware of how much certain descriptions are repeated, such as when Khallan uses her power or Richard draws the Sword of Truth, that is not so apparent when reading the books.
In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more.
His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence. In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.
In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out.

2006In Wizard's First Rule, Richard Cypher's world was turned upside down.
Once a simple woods guide, Richard was forced to become the Seeker of Truth, to save the world from the vile dominion of Darken Rahl, the most viciously savage and powerful wizard the world had ever seen. He was joined on this epic quest by his beloved Kahlan, the only survivor among the Confessors, who brought a powerful but benevolent justice to the land before Rahl's evil scourge. Richard and Kahlan must face Rahl and the Keeper's terrible minions. But first, Richard must endure the ministrations of the Sisters of Light, or die from the pain of magic that is his birthright and his curse.
While Richard undertakes the arduous journey to the forbidden city of the Sisters, Kahlan must embark upon a long and dangerous mission to Aydindril, citadel of the old wizards, where she hopes to find Zedd and the help only he can lend to their desperate cause. War, suffering, torture, and deceit lie in their paths, and nothing will save them from a destiny of violent death, unless their courage and faith are joined with luck and they find the elusive, Stone of Tears.
