Burningblade and Silvereye
The first book in this series took a while for me to get into, primarily due to the setting the story takes place in, which is a dystopian world with its own naming system for items and positions of authority, but once I had gotten used to that it was a fascinating read as it combines both fantasy and science fiction elements, sort of Star Wars meets John Carpenter's The Thing.
The pace of the first book isn't particularly fast, but there is always something going on that griped my attention causing me to keep turning the pages. The second book though, was much more immersive and interesting with the story unfolding at a faster tempo and the stakes being increased as it buildings to a stunning finale that sets up the last book in the trilogy to be epic.
The personalities of the characters, except for Maya and Gyre, start off in the first book as engaging, though on the whole shallow, but there is a marked improvement as the story unfolds, with the second book building on these relationships and interactions between them in more detail and depth.
The plot is one that has quite a bit or mystery and intrigue built into it, with a fair number of twists included too, making it more interesting and engaging the more I read.
Ashes of the Sun: Burningblade and Silvereye: Book 01
Four hundred years ago, a cataclysmic war cracked the world open. Amid the ashes, the Dawn Republic now stands guard over lands littered with eldritch relics and cursed by plaguespawn outbreaks. But a new conflict is looming and brother and sister Gyre and Maya have found themselves on opposite sides of it.
At the age of five, Maya was taken by the Twilight Order and trained to be a centarch, wielding forbidden arcana to enforce the Dawn Republic's rule. On that day, her brother, Gyre, swore to destroy the Order that stole his sister... whatever the cost.
Twelve years later, brother and sister are two very different people: she is the Twilight Order's brightest prodigy; he is a thief, bandit and revolutionary. Together, the siblings will discover that not even ties of blood will keep them from splitting the world in two.
