This was a series and author I was unaware of until I saw a review for Malice by a book tuber. The review was very enthusiastic, praising the character development and the writing style, which caused me to take note of the book title and the author's name.
It wasn't long after this that I saw a post on a Facebook book club page about the series and most interestingly information stating that the author acknowledged David Gemmell as one of the influences on his writing style, and had won one of the David Gemmell literary awards, always a good sign.
It wasn't long after this that I saw Malice was included in the Kindle monthly deals and so I bought it and added it to my ever-growing TBR list. Only a short period after that I came across an offer on the remaining books which was just too good to miss, so I ended up acquiring those as well. I don’t often buy a full series without having read at least one book by the author before, just in case I don't like the writer's style. However, on those occasions, I have bought a series I have always liked the books, so I was hoping the same was going to be true here.
Turns out it was, having now read all the books I have been very impressed both by the writing style and the characters in the story and most of all how they are developed. The plot moves along at a brisk tempo that goes up a notch with each book while allowing you the occasional breather to catch your breath and digest what has just happened, which is invariably pulse-pounding or heart-stopping moments as your emotional connection to the characters is deviously played with.
Young Corban watches enviously as boys become warriors, learning the art of war. He yearns to wield his sword and spear to protect his king’s realm. But that day will come all too soon. Only when he loses those he loves will he learn the true price of courage.
The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Although the giant-clans were broken in ages past, their ruined fortresses still scar the land. But now giants stir anew, the very stones weep blood and there are sightings of giant wyrms. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. Sorrow will darken the world, as angels and demons make it their battlefield. Then there will be a war to end all wars.
High King Aquilus summons his fellow kings to council, seeking an alliance in this time of need. Prophesy indicates darkness and light will demand two champions, the Black Sun and the Bright Star. They would be wise to seek out both, for if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind’s hopes and dreams will fall to dust.
