I purchased the first book in this series on my Mother's birthday, of the year she died, both to commemorate her birthday and to remember that over the years she had purchased many books for me as Birthday and Christmas presents. I chose this particular book because I had been considering it for several months and on that specific day it was the only book that I liked the synopsis of. Fortunately for me, it turned out to be an outstanding story and one that took me totally by surprise at how much I enjoyed it.
I was looking to acquire the other books in the series when the box set of the first three novels came up as a Kindle monthly deal, so I snapped that up, this was swiftly followed by the other books in the series, all of which have also been in the monthly deals.
On rereading Winter's Fury as part of the box set I was struck by just how compelling this tale is, which has a rich and diverse cast of characters that will enthral you with their personalities and the interactions, and the way these change between them as the story unfolds, making it endlessly fascinating and completely engrossing.
The settings in which the events transpire are as rich and as varied as the characters, with beautifully vivid descriptions. There is also plenty of action, tension and mystery coupled with a writing style that keeps the suspense mounting, keeping you turning the pages to see what happens next.
I'm a fan of David Gemmell, and this is a similar style of storytelling with the characters and action, and as such one I would happily recommend to fellow Gemmellites.
