Mennik Thorn

As with a lot of books I read, it was the cover of the first book which drew my attention and encouraged me to read the synopsis, which was appealing enough to get me to acquire the first two books in the series, both of which were part of the Monthly Kindle deals at the time.

Mennik Thorn is the only freelance Mage in a city teeming with Mages, all of whom seem to be affiliated with one of the three High Mages, he is a well-defined character with a self-deprecating sense of humour and a single-mindedness to do the right thing while keeping his independence, which tends to lead him into trouble he is usually ill-equipped to deal with since he is also one of the weakest Mages in the City.  There are also a fair number of supporting characters, all of which are equally well-written and have distinct and complex personalities that you find yourself warming to.

The series sees Nik trying to help people out but things tend to not go as planned and he ends up in trouble as he has to contend with other Mages, Gods, Ghosts, The Watch, The Ash Guard and the occasional Monster too.

The plots are well thought out and things don't conveniently happen just when they need to, which always makes a book more engaging to me.

Overall, this is a wonderful series and one I would recommend you read.

Shadow of a Dead God: Mennik Thorn: Book 01

If Mennik Thorn had known the morning would end with him being framed for murder, he would have stayed trapped in the cupboard.

It was only supposed to be one little job – a simple curse-breaking for Mennik to pay back a favor to his oldest friend. But then it all blew up in his face. Now he is wanted for murder by the mage-killing Ash Guard, his best friend is about to be executed, and something monstrous is killing all the witnesses.

So how is a down-on-his-luck mage, broke, traumatized, and with a habit of annoying the wrong people, supposed to prove his innocence when everyone believes he’s guilty?

If he wants to get out of this, he is going to have to throw himself back into the corrupt world of the city’s high mages, a world he fled years ago.

Even that may not be enough, because a new, dark power is rising in Agatos, and all that stands in its way is one second-rate mage…

Nectar for the God: Mennik Thorn: Book 02

In the city of Agatos, nothing stays buried forever.

Only an idiot would ignore his debt to a high mage, and Mennik Thorn is not an idiot, no matter what anyone might say. He’s just been … distracted. But now he’s left it too late, and if he doesn’t obey the high mage’s commands within the day, his best friends’ lives will be forfeit. So it’s hardly the time to take on an impossible case: proving a woman who murdered a stranger in full view is innocent.

Unfortunately, Mennik can’t resist doing the right thing – and now he’s caught in a deadly rivalry between warring high mages, his witnesses are dying, and something ancient has turned its eyes upon him.

The fate of the city is once again in the hands of a second-rate mage. Mennik Thorn should have stayed in hiding.
