Compared to the other books I have read by Lindsay, I would say this comes across as the least lighthearted so far, which is not a criticism, far from it because her usual trademark banter between characters is still there, just dialled back a notch or two, at least in the first novel, it's more prevalent in the second, which as you have got to know the characters a bit better seems a very natural progression.
The premise of the story revolves around the discovery of the Dragon Gate, which is believed to be a magical portal that can take you to another world, this is reminiscent of the Star Gate, from the movie and TV series, or at least that's what immediately sprung to mind as I read the first book, and which still holds true with the second, though there are significant differences between the two. The gate is discovered by normal humans who are quickly captured by magic-wielding humans, however, there are several factions of these mages, all of whom want the gate and are willing to go to war with each other to get it or control it.
The second book reveals that the gate can access multiple worlds, but information discovered by Jadora and Jak while returning the gate to its original location points towards possible dangers if the gate is opened.
These are perhaps Lindsay's most thought-provoking books so far, but they are just as engaging and entertaining as her other books and definitely well worth reading.
As a cartography student, Jak has always dreamed of finding the lost dragon gate and exploring and mapping distant worlds.
Developing magical powers and becoming a powerful wizard? Not a chance.
Wizards are cruel and inhumane, warring with each other from their great sky cities and keeping most of humanity enslaved. Jak wants nothing to do with them.
But when he and his archaeologist mother unearth the gate, they attract the attention of the very wizards they sought to avoid. Even more troubling, Jak starts developing magical powers of his own, powers that could rival those of the great rulers.
Fate may have given him the opportunity to change the world.
But the wizard rulers don’t like change, and when they detect threats, they send their elite assassins to eliminate them.
If Jak can’t unlock the power of the gate, and the powers within himself, the world will remain enslaved forever.
