▪講演要旨：

All human faces are created equal. We all share the same face parts (two eyes, a nose, and a mouth) arranged in a similar spatial configuration. Despite the perceptual similarity of faces, we are able to recognize the face of a friend, significant other, or colleague in a blink of an eye. How is this impressive feat of visual recognition accomplished? Faces, unlike most objects, are encoded and retrieved as holistic memories. In my talk, I will discuss what a holistic face memory is. I will examine recent work in our lab suggesting that holistic face representations are formed in milliseconds and produce memories that can last a lifetime. This research has implications for understanding how experience shapes the recognition of own- and other-race faces and how breakdowns in face recognition occur in autism and prosopagnosia.

顔認知の研究において世界的に著名なJames Tanaka教授（カナダヴィクトリア大学）の招聘に伴い、日本女子大学新泉山館にて顔認知の全体処理（holistic processing）をテーマにしたシンポジウムが開催されました（共催：中央大学人文科学研究所研究会「視覚と認知の発達」）。Tanaka教授は、インパクトのある研究一連の実験データを紹介しながら、顔認知のユニークな特性である全体処理の重要性についてご講演頂きました。講演後はフロアからの様々な質問により、顔認知の様々な側面に関して、多角的に議論が交わされました。
