Reported Speech (also known as Indirect Speech) is used to communicate what someone else said without using their exact words. When we report a statement, we usually shift the Verb Tense back one step into the past (known as Backshifting) because the original words were spoken at an earlier time.

Trong ngữ pháp, Reported Speech (Câu gián tiếp) là cách tường thuật lại lời nói của một người khác mà không cần lặp lại chính xác từng từ của họ. Khi chuyển từ Direct Speech (Câu trực tiếp) sang câu gián tiếp, chúng ta thường phải thay đổi thì của động từ, đại từ và các trạng từ chỉ thời gian/nơi chốn.
Tense Changes (Thay đổi về thì):
Khi động từ tường thuật (như say hoặc tell) ở thì quá khứ, các thì trong câu trực tiếp phải lùi lại một thì.
Direct: "I am tired," he said. (Present Simple)
Reported: He said that he was tired. (Past Simple)
Translation: Anh ấy nói rằng anh ấy mệt.
Pronoun Changes (Thay đổi đại từ):
Đại từ nhân xưng và tính từ sở hữu thay đổi để phù hợp với người đang tường thuật.
Example: "My car is broken," she said.
Translation (Reported): She said that her car was broken. (Cô ấy nói rằng xe của cô ấy bị hỏng.)
Time and Place Changes (Thay đổi thời gian và nơi chốn):
Các từ chỉ thời gian và vị trí cần được điều chỉnh cho phù hợp với thời điểm tường thuật.
Now -> Then / Today -> That day / Here -> There.
Example: "I will call you tomorrow," he said.
Translation (Reported): He said he would call me the next day. (Anh ấy nói anh ấy sẽ gọi cho tôi vào ngày hôm sau.)
Reporting Questions (Tường thuật câu hỏi):
Đối với câu hỏi Yes/No, chúng ta sử dụng If hoặc Whether. Trật tự câu chuyển về dạng khẳng định (không đảo ngữ).
Example: "Do you like coffee?" she asked.
Translation (Reported): She asked if I liked coffee. (Cô ấy đã hỏi liệu tôi có thích cà phê không.)

Reported Speech (also known as Indirect Speech) is the "re-engineering" of a original statement to fit a new context. When you report what someone else said, you are essentially translating their words from their "real-time" perspective into your "reporting" perspective. This process requires precise adjustments to tenses, pronouns, and time markers to maintain the logical integrity of the information.

Trong ngữ pháp, Reported Speech (Câu tường thuật) được dùng để thuật lại lời nói của một người khác mà không cần lặp lại nguyên văn (không dùng dấu ngoặc kép). Khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp, chúng ta thường phải thực hiện quy tắc "lùi thì" (backshift).
Tense Backshift (Quy tắc lùi thì):
Khi động từ tường thuật ở quá khứ (said, told), động từ chính trong câu phải lùi về một thì quá khứ hơn.
Present Simple $\rightarrow$ Past Simple: "I work" $\rightarrow$ He said he worked.
Present Continuous $\rightarrow$ Past Continuous: "I am working" $\rightarrow$ He said he was working.
Past Simple / Present Perfect $\rightarrow$ Past Perfect: "I worked / have worked" $\rightarrow$ He said he had worked.
Will $\rightarrow$ Would: "I will work" $\rightarrow$ He said he would work.
Can $\rightarrow$ Could: "I can work" $\rightarrow$ He said he could work.
Changes in Pronouns (Thay đổi đại từ):
Đại từ nhân xưng và tính từ sở hữu phải thay đổi để phù hợp với người đang tường thuật.
Example: "I like my job," said Ann. $\rightarrow$ Ann said she liked her job.
Time and Place Adverbs (Trạng từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn):
Vì thời điểm tường thuật khác với thời điểm nói, các trạng từ phải được điều chỉnh.
Now $\rightarrow$ Then.
Today $\rightarrow$ That day.
Yesterday $\rightarrow$ The day before.
Tomorrow $\rightarrow$ The next day.
Here $\rightarrow$ There.
Reporting Questions (Tường thuật câu hỏi):
Yes/No Questions: Dùng if hoặc whether và đưa câu về dạng trần thuật (không đảo ngữ).
Example: "Do you like coffee?" $\rightarrow$ He asked if I liked coffee.
Wh- Questions: Giữ nguyên từ để hỏi và đưa câu về dạng trần thuật.
Example: "Where do you live?" $\rightarrow$ He asked where I lived.
Reporting Commands/Requests (Mệnh lệnh và Yêu cầu):
Sử dụng cấu trúc: Verb + Object + (not) To-Infinitive.
Example: "Close the door," he said. $\rightarrow$ He told me to close the door.
Example: "Don't smoke," she said. $\rightarrow$ She asked me not to smoke.
