sustained investigation #2

materials: Graphite pencil, black ink pen, color pencils, colored markers.

measurements: 8'' 12''

artist statement:

When creating this piece I wanted to show my interpretation of the theater masks, of happy and sad. That's where I got the original idea, but then I had to incorporate that into my inquiry question. I did this by using the term to mask ( some people use a different emotion to Shield what they're truly feeling from the public).

I started off by making a sketch of the two different phases of happy and sad. I knew I wanted to incorporate the lettering The Mask to give a more literal sense of what the art piece was about. I wanted to color the different faces according to the emotions so for happiness I did pinks and reds, and for sad I used different blues.

So far all my sustained investigations have been based on a feeling that I have felt personally, for this piece that is still the case. I've had to hide my true emotions to stop myself from getting in trouble or just to show people that I'm alright. so I wanted to create this piece to almost honor anyone who's had to do that and has not felt free enough to express their own feelings.
