Duck Stamp

The subject of this project is a male mallard duck in a pond. The materials I used to make this were oil pastels and a reference image of a mallard duck. This piece was made by matching shapes to the image, layering colors with oil pastel, and mixing them with my finger-tips. I decided to do the duck stamp project because I was having a hard time with the other project option. I liked the mallard duck and the picture of one that I found, so I drew it in the water. I did a little land in the background because I thought it was the best option and that it would look good.

An art technique that is showcased in this project is a high horizon line. This is shown in the water line, and how it is seen going behind the duck's body. It is higher up then disappearing back behind the body of the duck. My project evolved because I kept layering color to match the colors in the image of the duck. I kept revising the water color and contouring.

The story behind this artwork is how I wanted to do a duck because I have ducks, and I love them. I chose the mallard duck because they sometimes come to the pond at my house, but I always see them at the larger pond down the road. This relates to my life because ducks are my favorite type of waterfowl. If I could go back and change anything about my project, it would be to color, with oil pastel, closer to the duck's body so it doesn't look like there is this weird glow.
