Nure-onna
Colored Pencil
Artist Statement:
For this project, I decided to choose another Yokai creature. I wanted to do another Yokai because the last time I did research, I found so many interesting ones that I wanted to draw as well. I chose to do Nure-onna because I really like the concept of a snake-human creature. I did a lot of research about this creature and there were so many different depictions that I liked, but I settled on this one because it was very close to the original as well as being pretty interesting looking.
I used drawing paper and colored pencils to create this piece. I chose these materials because I wanted to use something that wouldn't be very time-consuming.
I started this project out by doing research about different depictions of this creature, deciding what I wanted to draw using a compilation of the depictions I found. Once I did this, I sketched out my favorite idea, which was a combination of multiple examples that I found. Next, I decided on my color palette. I chose to go with green and blue colors. I think the color choice worked out pretty well, except it doesn't look the best with the composition of her body in this drawing. I darkened the color over lines increases to show shadow and tried to do a gradient from green to blue down her chest. if I were to add anything else, would be a tie-dye looking background using the same thing colors on her body. I would also try to add more of a definition of her shape, maybe going over lines with black pen or marker.
