Harpy
Fine-point Marker, Pen, & Patterned Paper
Artist Statement:
For this piece I did a harpy from Greek Mythology. I really wanted to emphasize the wings in relation to my inquiry question of "How can I emphasize the unique features of different mythological creatures?" and I thought this was an interesting way to do it. Then I added patterned paper for some color. I chose to do a harpie for the mythical creature of this project because I really like harpies and the idea of having wings. Just the thought of having them and being able to fly is very cool for me and something that I would fantasize about as a kid. Occasionally, I still do when I'm feeling down.
For this piece the materials I used were a Sharpie pen to line the feathers, a black pen to color them in, and a circle hole-puncher to punch out pieces of patterned paper.
In thinking about creating this project, I knew that I wanted to emphasise the wings because they are most defining feature of the harpy. However, I did not want it to take an excessively long time to make. So I actually went to the website on how to make art faster, and it had a recommendation to cover up your with tape in geometric shapes to you have less area to cover when you fill it in. I thought this was a really good idea. I made a full sketch of the harpy and then took strips of painters tape and covered parts of the wings up. Then I went in with the pens and traced and colored them in. Then I took the tape and erased to pencil line from the sketch that were underneath it. However, when I had taken the tape off, some of the paper got ripped off. My project evolved because I decided to add the dots of patterned paper to cover the rips and to add a pop of color. My next steps could be to finish the body of the harpy, and to add some tiny patterned dots.
