The subject of my art is Ophiotaurus, a Greek mythological beast that I a quite fond of. The setting is several patterns I designed that I am also fond of. The work was made by first tediously sketching out the creature and the patterns, going over them with a thin Sharpie, shading the shapes in with water color colored-pencil (something I love using), and then going over that with water on a paint brush. I chose to create this specific artwork because it was basically free choice and I wanted to incorporate things that I enjoyed. The work is arranged with the creature atop several cool patterns, however Ophiotaurus was drawn before them.
The one composition technique that is mostly shown in this artwork is leading lines. This is shown in how the larger lines on all of the patterns lead to the creature in some way. My project evolved because I kept adding little accessories and trinkets onto Ophiotaurus to spice him up. My project was revised because I had to add more color from the colored pencils after I had painted them the first time.
The story behind this artwork is that we had to create an independent project from something we've used in class this year to show our skill. I showed pattern, watercolor, and pure contour. I wanted to do something that I was going to enjoy doing, so this is how it turned out. This project relates to my life because I think greek mythological creatures are really cool. I've been wanting to start an art series on my interpretation of the creatures, and I thought "when is better to start then now?" so this happens to be the first in my series. ~ I'm very excited to do the rest!
