Medusa

Watercolor & Pen

Artist Statement:

For this project, I decided I would do a creature from Greek mythology, and I wanted to do one that everyone had heard of. I decided to do this because I wanted to create my own version of this popular creature, and I thought Medusa would be a cool one to choose, as a creature that shows up in almost every greek myth-based movie/book. I researched about her and found many different depictions, but the one that stood out to me the most was the depiction with wings. My creative gears started turning as I imagined how that would look, and I thought it would be so cool. So instead of emphasizing her trademark snake hair, I emphasized her wings with a bright purple gradient, and drew them to be flared out; the centerpiece of her look.

I created this work by using watercolor and then going back over the lines with a purple pen.

I started out by creating a sketch after doing a lot of research. I figured out the color concepts I wanted to go with, which were purple and black, and I wanted to use purple to emphasize the wings. I did a gradient from black to purple with the wings, made the dress all black, and gave the snakes on her head and her skin a light purple tinge. I also added her eyes closed because if they are open, things turn to stone. Afterward, I went back in and added purple pen lines to her jewelry and the features on her dress. I also did lines over her wings which made them stand out more. If I were to add anything it would probably be a background or some more accessories to her outfit.
