Braced in Flowers
The story behind this piece is that it is one of the sustained investigation sculptures with the main theme of flowers, that that is obvious where that comes in. I also wanted to make something that would brighten up my room and would represent the lining for the real flowers to bloom later on in spring. This project relates to my life because I really love flowers and gardening, and combining that with wire sculpture making, which is something I also enjoy, made this project quite enjoyable in my life.
The materials I used for this project were 28 gauge dark annealed steel wire, 18 gauge galvanized steel wire, and a pair of needle-nosed pliers.
My process was first different sized wire rings for the vase, and then connecting them together. For the stems, I wrapped them around a pencil to get the spiral shape. I created several petals on a single wire, and connected them to the end of the stem. I used the thin wire to bend a spiral for the center of the flower. My project evolved because I changed from a single to a double wire for the stem, and from separate wire petals to a single wire with all of the petals on it. If I were to do anything next I would maybe add more flowers.
