Still-Life

Coffee Cup

HB pencil & charcoal paper

Artist Statement:

For this project the class had to pick an object or set of objects to draw a still-life of by studying it. I chose to do my coffee cup because it is something I use everyday and don't really think too much about, but I realized that I actually appreciated it. This relates to my life because recently I have made a resolution to try to appreciate what I have in my life because there are a lot of people that are less fortunate than I am. And I realized a simple coffee cup was something that I appreciated I had.

For this piece I simply used an HB pencil, a white eraser, a tortillion, and charcoal paper.

I started this work out by studying my coffee cup and figuring out what materials I needed. Then I drew the outline of the mug and the lines on it's surface. Lastly, I filled in and used the tortillion on the shadows. My project evolved because at first I only drew one shadow, but then I noticed there were two because there are two lights in my room. If I continued this work, my next steps would be to add some highlights with white charcoal.
