Musical Spaceship

Colored Pencil & Gel Pen

Artist Statement:

For this project everyone in the class was assigned a fun prompt. The one I got was "draw a silly spaceship." I wasn't really sure how to do this one, so I just decided to do the stereotypical green alien and flying saucer theme. Although I did something a bit different with the "flying saucer" and designed a little spaceship for the alien. I do think it looks quite silly, especially with the music boxes, color scheme, and the alien head antenna. I chose to add the music component because music is a big part of my life as it makes me feel happy and I genuinely enjoy listening to it, so I thought adding the music boxes would be a fun way to spice this piece up and make it a whole lot more interesting.

For this project I just used a 2B pencil to do the sketch and some colored pencils to color it in. Then I used a black pen to make smaller details.

I first looked on the internet for spaceship design ideas and I got an idea of how to make my own from those examples. Then I did several sketches in my notebook until I settled on one design. So I sketched that out on a separate piece of paper. I thought about the colors I wanted to use and then I colored it in. My project evolved when I added a few highlights to the metal parts on the spaceship and used a pen for smaller details. However, there are several parts to this piece that I am not very proud of. The only thing that really looks good is the ship with the alien and the clouds. The rest of the background and the music coming out of the music boxes are not very great looking and I feel that they downgrade the rest of the piece. You can even see the indent lines of the other spaceship sketches I did in the background as well. My next steps would be to cut out the spaceship and stick in on a new background as a pop-out piece, sort of like a relief. Maybe the background could be a watercolor one instead.
