Stars & Stripes

USA Chicken

The story behind this art was that we had to create something with stars and stripes, but only using red, white, blue, and/or black. I chose to make a chicken because I thought the color assortment would look really interesting on feathers. I also wanted to do something different than others would think of or do. This piece is connected to me because I have chickens a home and I love them.

To make this piece, I used bristol board paper and lightly sketched out and outline with and HB pencil. then I burnished and shaded with colored pencils.

My process in creating this was that I started with the chicken's head and face, and worked my way down the neck and out to the tail and the rest of the body. I carefully burnished and faded each feather while doing this. Then I sketched stripes in the background and filled every other one in. My project evolved because I added more different colors to the feathers than I thought I would. My next steps with this could be to darken the colors more and make the shape of the stars a bit neater.
