Amabie

Colored Pencil

Artist Statement:

For this project, I chose to create a work on the yokai Amabie. She is a female yokai with long hair, a beak, and three fishtails. In the original drawings and art, she is very stout-looking and it’s almost like she is a walking fish. I changed this because I thought a human-like look would turn out much cooler with the three tails and such. I chose to draw the creature Amabie because I like the idea of doing another aquatic creature and changing her look to be much more interesting.

I used drawing paper and colored pencils for this project. I chose these materials because I had some ideas for a color design that I could do with colored pencils.

My process for this work was to first look at a lot of examples online of modern and ancient interpretations of this creature. With these examples and information, I was able to come up with my own design for this creature. I took this design I had in my head and sketched it out onto some drawing paper. Next, I used the color ideas I had and used some colored pencils to complete it. I even added star-shaped eyelashes around her eyes because, in the ancient drawings, there is a star shape around them. If I were to add anything else it would be to add an ocean reef scene behind her.
