Centaur

Pencil & Charcoal

Artist Statement:

For this project I decided to choose a centaur as my creature subject. I chose a centaur because I was going through a lot of my old sketches, and I came across one that was especially undesirable. I wanted to remake this sketch into something much better than it was before. and instead of doing a male centaur , I decided to do a female. I used my better understanding of body structure and form to recreate this piece.

For materials, I used some graphite pencil and charcoal. I used these materials because I wanted to emphasize her body through shading.

My process for this work was to start out by looking at different images of centaurs, horses, and the female body. Once I came up with some good ideas in my head, I decided to sketch it out on paper. I filled this sketch in with charcoal, darkening the areas with shadow and creases. I added things to make a composition more interesting like a sword and headband. I also added a shadow below her to show where the ground was. If I were to add anything else, it would probably be to darken the shadows and create more of a background.
