Silverdale
Walked September 2024
This 7km walk loops you round the village of Silverdale on Morecombe bay. It includes the sands of the bay (check the tides) with views across its vast expanse, the village itself, woodland, farmland and the Pepperpot on the hill overlooking the village.
We started at he Gibraltar Farm Campsite and Wolf House Cafe but you could equally start from the Silverdale Hotel.
1.
At the end of the road, turn left to head past the hotel to the shore (if it is high tide, you may prefer to take the upper path running parallel with the shoreline). At the shore there are some cottages and private parking, turn right and follow the shore line until you reach a small cove with a circular cave.
2.
3.
Take the path heading inland from the cove. At the top, continue along the road.
4.
Follow the footpath on the left as it vires off up the bank.
5.
The footpath signs lead you up a lane to what appears to be someone's front garden/driveway. In the corner is a little gate which continues the path.
6.
At Castle Bank, take the footpath along the base of the wood and follow signs to the Pepper Pot.
7.
The Pepper Pot is a memorial to Queen Victoria's Jubilee standing on the top of the hill. From here is a magnificent view of the village and the bay.
8.
Retrace your steps to the footpath at the foot of the wood and turn left to continue the walk.
9.
Follow the path to the car park then cross the road and continue on The Row.
10.
Some way along the road there is a footpath on the right. Walk across the first field, then take the path that veers to the left across the next set of fields.
12.
13.
Where teh path meets the road, continue along the road, then turn right on the "main" road back to the village.
Look out for this wall. Silverdale was known for its disputes between neighbours. There are several recorded examples of "grudge walls" built to prevent a neighbour having a view of the sea following an argument.
14.
Take the footpath on the left, signposted to Gilbraltar/ Jenny Brown's Point. This takes you through the woods back to the start.
