Winterslow - Pitton

Walked 28th April 2022

This 14km (9 mile) walk starts in Middle Winterslow, loops along the edge of the Bentley Wood nature reserve, down through the villages of Farley and Pitton and back to the start. There are no steep hills and plenty of places to pause for packed lunch.

In spring there are notable sighting of plentiful bluebells.

The follows the boundary to Bentley Wood, resplendent in bluebells in the spring and rich in wildlife. Almost lost in World War 2, it was replanted by the Forestry Commission before being sold by the Government in the 1980s. Fortunately it was bought by a Trust which now manages it for wildlife and the local people.

Opposite Farley Hospital is All Saints 17th Century church. Possibly designed by Wren, it was built by the same patron as the alms house opposite.

The route passes the 17th Century Alms House in Farley, opposite the church. It is till run by a charitable trust to provide serviced accommodation.
